We will be starting the year with a topic titled Turrets, Tiaras and fire breathing Dragons! We are sure the children will be engaged by the topic and will develop knowledge and skills through a range of different activities. Our author for the year is Roald Dahl, we will be finding out what made him such a famous writer.
We have made a tree in our classroom of all your parent wishes hopes and dreams. It has some amazing poems, CD's full of pictures and some very creative butterflies and masks all with comments about what your children are good at now and what you think they will be good at in the future. Thank you so much for all your contributions it looks amazing!
We talked about our personal qualities, what we are good at and what we enjoy and how we will become good Year 2 learners. We thought about what we might want to be when we grow up. We wrote it down on chalkboards and have displayed our ideas on a canvas which is hung up in our classroom. We will look at these again at the end of the year to see if we still aspire to these careers or if we have changed our mind based on our learning througout the year.
We have been looking at St Chads expectations and had fun creating Superhero characters that follow the expectations. They show what we are good at and also what our qualities are. We made peg dolls of what we would look like as a Superhero character and wrote amazing story openings introducing our character, the setting and our super powers.
We enjoyed celebrating Roald Dahl's birthday the children dressed up as characters from Roald Dahl books. They all looked amazing and we enjoyed a day of finding out about him, reading some of his books, painting pictures of characters and writing our own endings to the story The Enormous Crocodile. Have a look at his website it is very informative and full of activities and games- www.roalddahl.com
We had a special visitor in school today from St Johns Amulance. We talked about safe adults to go to who will help us when we are poorly or hurt. We also talked about how to deal with an emergency- someone who has hurt themselves badly . We learnt that we need to think and then get help- we might need to shout for help and try to phone 999 on a mobile phone or a home telephone. We had to decide when we need to get help- Do you phone 999 if someone has a tummy ache? What if someone has had a big bang to the head? or They are struggling to breathe? We talked about our experiences of people who have been to hospital. We learnt that someone who is unconcious is someone who looks asleep but does not wake up! We learnt how to make a 999 call- we need to ask the operator for an Ambulance, the Police or the Fire Brigade! They will ask us some questions- Who we are? Where we are? and What has happened? We will need to know our address if we are at home! We must not put the phone down the operator will tell us what to do. We will now be able to help in an emergency!
We have been learning how to dance to Medieval music!
We have been very busy designing and making our own model Medieval Castles. They have towers, turrets and some even have dungeons- even though we found out that Medieval Castles did not have dungeons. In science we have been busy answering two questions- How to catch a dragon? and How to make a door that shuts fast to keep enemies out? We have developed our ideas of push and pull forces using the thinking hats and designed our own drawbridges and catapults. We have made them and attached them to our castles.
We have been learning how to plan and then write a retell of The Princess and the Dragon and George and the Dragon. Harry and his dad have been busy retelling the story using Playmobile and Jack using his lego castle. We have written our own stories about Princesses and Knights and a tiny dragon too. Have a look on the VLE for the videos of us retelling the story of George and the Dragon. We worked together to write scripts, build our scenery using lego and chose the figures for our characters. We used different voices for characters and developed expression in our voices. It was lots of fun too.
Mrs Hunter has been very impressed with our Maths skills. We have been learning how to draw our own number line adding on in groups or 10 and 1.
We have also been looking at 2 digit numbers and talking about what they are- a group of ten's and a group of one's. This is called Place Value. We have been using this language to talk about 2 digit numbers we choose and have been finding them on 100 squares. We have noticed lots of number patterns on the 100 square.
Some of us have even been looking at 3 digit numbers and deciding how many groups of hundreds, tens and ones are in each number. Making our own 3 digit number generator cups will help us to make numbers from 111 to 999. We will use this to help us to learn more about Place Value. (The zeros are hiding inside the cups bacause the zeros are still therre when a one is added to a 10 you just can not see it)
We have worked very hard to learn our lines, where to stand, walk and move on the stage and to sing the songs beautifully. We enjoyed perfoming our play OINK to the rest of the school in our dress rehearsal and to lots of parents, carers, grandmas and grandads in both of our shows. We spoke loud and clear and sang and danced with lots of energy. Everyone is so proud of us and we have had lots of comments about how well we did, what super acting and how well we stood up and spoke and sang infront of so many people. We loved dressing up and taking part in lots of craft activities to decorate the hall. We are sad it is all over and have enjoyed being a fantastic cast!
