Our topic for this half term is The Great Fire of London! We have been using the thinking hats to help us think of questions we would like to find out the answers to. Some of the questions we thought of are- Did it really happen? Why did the fire spread and Were there fire fighters and fire engines then? We have watched videos that show what happened are are looking forward to finding out more about The Great Fire and the damaged caused as well as what people learnt from it that makes things better for us living today.
Oliver and Harry completed one of the homework challenges and baked a loaf of bread. They brought it in school to share with the class with little packets of butter. It was delicious. We talked about the fire starting in the bakery and what type of things they would have made in the bakery in 1666. Elva and Ben also baked a loaf of bread each and Sony made some twisted sultana buns. They were all "actually really tasty." (A line for Oink our show)
We looked at some pictures of London on fire and we sketched our own pictures adding colour with pastels. We use orange, red and yellow together to create the effect of the flames.
We have found out about how the fire started and how it spread and we created our own model city of London as it was in 1666. We found out about Tudor buildings and talked about what they were made of. We had lots of discussions about what people had learnt from the fire and how things had changed after it and what new things had been invented. We even designed our own Fire Engines.
We then looked at London as it is now. We looked at the old buildings some of them were even around in 1666 although they did need to be repaired. We looked at the different attractions both old and new and drew sketches of them. We also created our own leaflets and pop up maps. We worked in small groups to create London city as it is now developing our 3D sculpture skills joining recycled and craft materials to create different buildings and attractions.
As part of our Christmas celebrations we took part in a range of different activities from solving problems for Santa's Elves to creating Christmas cards to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We enjoyed counting down the days on our advent calender and decorating our classroom with different decorations we made using a range a crafts. The whole school took part in a Christmas TASC day where we designed and made a hanging decoration to show the/a part of the nativity story. We enjoyed finding out about why people have christmas trees in their houses and retold the navivity story in our own words. We used the TASC wheel to help us to gather and organise information about different materials, generate our own ideas looking at different aspects of the story and decide on the decoration we would make and choose the materials we would use. We enjoyed working on our own decorations whilst helping each other to find ways to add hangers to our finished decoration. We showed our finished designs in a celebration assembly and talked to each othet about what went well and what we would improve on our design. Our decorations went home to hang on our trees.
